Wei Wei, Ph.D.
Postdoc
American Heart Association Fellow

Wei Wei received his B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Zhejiang University in China and Ph.D. from Stanford. Before coming to Stanford, he received research training in the Schwarz lab at Harvard Medical School and in the Nunnari lab at UC Davis, where he focused on understanding how mitochondrial motility is regulated in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells. He was a graduate student and now a postdoctoral researcher in the Long lab. His projects aim to bring new insight into our understanding of the endocrine system via comprehensively mapping tissue-specific secretory factors in vivo. Outside of lab, he likes playing basketball and cooking.

Amanda Wiggenhorn, B.S.
Postdoc

Amanda received her B.S. in Chemical Biology from University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, Amanda worked in Dr. Daniel K. Nomura’s lab on expanding the druggability of cancer with chemoproteomic platforms. As a graduate student in the Long Lab, she is utilizing chemical biology, biochemistry, and mass spectrometry techniques to study secreted polypeptides. Amanda hopes to uncover novel mechanisms of tissue crosstalk in physiological processes, such as exercise. In her free time, Amanda enjoys trail running and road biking.

Shuke Xiao, Ph.D.
Postdoc
American Heart Association Fellow

Shuke received his B.S in Biological Sciences from Nanjing University (2016), and his Ph.D. from Yale University (2022). Working with Dr. John Carlson, he studied the molecular and cellular basis of chemosensory systems. Shuke joined the Long lab in 2022 as a postdoctoral researcher and hope to study how metabolism changes during hibernation or torpor and how is such change regulated.

Maria Dolores Moya Garzon, Ph.D.
Postdoc
Fundación Alfonso Martín Escudero Fellow

Maria Dolores received her B.S. in Pharmacy (2013) and M.S. in Biotechnology (2014) from the University of Granada (Spain). She completed her international Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry (2019) with excellent cum laude at the University of Granada. Her Ph.D. research was focused on the development of new drugs for the treatment of Primary Hyperoxaluria type 1. She was a visiting Ph.D. student at the Universities of Leiden (the Netherlands) and La Laguna (Spain). Maria Dolores joined the Long Lab in 2020 as a postdoctoral fellow and her project aims to understand the molecular regulation of N-acyl amino acids in the blood. In her free time, she enjoys traveling around the world.

Alan Tung, B.S.
Graduate student, Cancer Biology
SGF Lucille P. Markey Biomedical Research Fellow

Alan Tung is enthusiastic about metabolism, signaling, and biotechnology. He received a B.S. in molecular biology from UC San Diego (2020). As an undergrad, he received research training in Dr. Reuben Shaw's lab at the Salk Institute. There, he studied how AMPK signaling modulates mitochondrial homeostasis. As a graduate student in the Long Lab, he hopes to investigate the crosstalk between cancer and systemic metabolism via novel signaling metabolites. When he's not in lab, he enjoys singing, tennis and traveling. You can find him tweeting at @alanshtung.

Bernadette Gallardo, B.A.
Lab Manager

Bernadette Gallardo received her BA from California State University, Long Beach. Prior to joining the Long Lab, she worked in the biotech industry for five years. Her experience in laboratory and quality management allows her to utilize her skills in the academic research setting. Outside of the lab, Berna enjoys graphic design, photography, and spending time with her cats.

Sipei Fu, B.A.
Graduate Student, Biology
Bio-X Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellow

Sipei Fu received her BA in Biology from Boston University and worked at Harvard Medical School subsequently where she profiled protein-protein interactions in human cells. Currently, she is a second-year grad student in the Biology department. Her research focuses on studying supplement-driven metabolism change. Sipei enjoys traveling, working out, and cooking in her free time.

Jan Spaas, Ph.D.
Postdoc
School of Medicine Dean’s Fellow

Jan Spaas received his BSc and MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences & Physiotherapy from Hasselt University, Belgium. He was joint PhD student in Biomedical Sciences and Health Sciences at Hasselt University and Ghent University (2017-2023), where he studied histidine-containing dipeptides in relation to the brain (neuroinflammation and demyelination), the skeletal muscle, and exercise. Jan’s main research interests are neuroscience, muscle physiology, metabolism, and exercise biochemistry. Joining the Long Lab in October 2023, he aims to uncover physiological pathways of periphery-to-brain tissue crosstalk and their relation to exercise and diet. When not at work, you will find Jan doing sports, watching sports, travelling around, or eating cookies and chocolate.

Andrew Markhard, B.A.
Research scientist

Andrew Markhard received his BA in Biology from Carleton College. He began his scientific career in the lab of David Sabatini at the Whitehead Institute and MIT, studying mTOR and its activation by amino acids. He then worked in the lab of Vamsi Mootha at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, studying mitochondrial metabolism and physiology, and the mitochondrial calcium uniporter. From there, he moved to the Infectious Disease Initiative of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco, working to identify host factors for the replication of mosquito-borne RNA viruses. In the Long Lab, he aims to study metabolic pathways and their regulation in fitness and disease. Outside of lab, he enjoys cooking, cycling, and traveling.

Owen Jump, B.S.
Research technician

Owen received his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from UC Santa Cruz in 2024. There he worked in Dr. Carol Greider’s lab on the mechanisms governing telomere length maintenance. In the Long lab, he studies metabolism during hibernation. Outside of lab Owen enjoys sports, trying new foods and activities, and reading.

Gracie
Lab mascot

Gracie is a spunky German Shepherd who lives with Veronica and is mascot to the Long Lab. She is currently studying the health benefits of sleeping 12-15 hours a day. She is also training to be a well-mannered and obedient pup. You will find her napping in Jon’s office, and during her free time, she enjoys going on long walks and playing with other pups! Follow some of her adventures on Instagram @Tail_tales_of_gracie_the_gsd.
